Santas Casas and the country’s philanthropic hospitals have been facing a severe financial crisis. More than 500 institutions have closed their doors in the last five years. According to the Confederation of Santas Casas de Misericórdia, Hospitals and Philanthropic Entities (CMB), the sector’s deficit reaches R$ 10.9 billion.
These institutions are responsible for maintaining 169,000 hospital beds and 26,000 ICU beds. The crisis puts at risk the continuity of treatments already started in these places.
The sector’s concern increased after the Senate approved PEC 11/2022, Proposed Amendment to the Constitution that deals with the salary floor for nursing professionals. The measure, sent to the Chamber of Deputies, would have an impact of R$ 6.3 billion to Santas Casas and philanthropic hospitals, according to the CMB.
The main reason for the crisis, according to the Confederation, is the gap of about 60% between the amount spent on the maintenance of institutions and the resources received from the Unified Health System (SUS).
