Find My Device will receive a long-awaited feature: you can find smartphones without the Internet

Google’s Find My Device app is about to receive an important update that will allow you to locate your smartphone even when you’re not connected to the internet. Apparently, the search giant intends to make this feature as effective as it is on the iPhone or on Samsung smartphones.

If your mobile device is lost or stolen, you can try to find it using the Find My Device app. The service also allows you to perform some actions remotely, such as locking your smartphone, signing out of your Google account, or erasing data. The main disadvantage of this service is that it requires an Internet connection to work. At least at the moment it is, but the company can solve this problem.

The description of the Google Update for December 2022 contains an intriguing mention of Find My Device. It says that the service now supports encrypted last known location reporting for Android devices using a new private framework. Thanks to this feature, you can find your smartphone even if it is not connected to the Internet. This means that Google will receive information from nearby Bluetooth devices. All data will be encrypted, and only Google will be able to see the location of the Android smartphone. The same technology has long been used by Apple and Samsung.

It is currently unknown when the new feature will be available. This may be part of the Android 14 operating system, which is scheduled for release at the end of 2023.
