Find out how Osvaldo is doing almost 40 years after being rejected on a TV dating show

In 1986, Osvaldo participated in the program “Namoro na TV”, presented by Silvio Santos. At 24 years old and with a full mustache, he got a “no” from every girl on the show that day.

When he returned the following year, without a mustache, it was Osvaldo who said “no” to the girls. A montage that joins the two videos became famous on social networks as “Osvaldo’s revenge”. In conversation with CNN, at the age of 61, he explains that “it has nothing to do” with revenge, and that receiving or saying “no” was part of the program’s dynamic.

“I actually started going as a joke. My brothers went, some friends went too, so it was fun even at the time. I was really alone, so who knows, right?”

Osvaldo participated six times in the program, but none of them turned into dating. The candidates could say “yes” or “no” to the suitors who were also part of the program, and if they were corresponded, they sat down to talk.

“I met people who really found their match there. So the program worked, right?”, said Osvaldo.

For him, the participation yielded a few dozen letters – which could be sent by viewers to program participants – and few meetings.

Almost four decades later, Osvaldo abandoned his mustache for good and works as a lawyer in the municipal public administration of São Paulo. He goes to the office in person only twice a week, but he has a busy social life with his friends in the condominium.

He’s not married, but he’s not alone either. “I have a partner, but we don’t live together. We live in the same condominium, but she lives in one building and I live in the other. And we’ve been together for a long time.”

Together for four years, they met in the common areas of the condominium, which has “a very intense social life” according to Osvaldo. The two began to talk more and more as interest grew, and I’m glad they didn’t have to resort to a television show in 2020.

“With the format that these programs have today, I would not go. I think they are wanting to do something else, and not provide a meeting between those who are alone and those who are alone”, said Osvaldo.

When the videos of the program went viral, in addition to the “revenge”, netizens commented on the appearance of the participants, who looked much older than the age they said they were.

“It was another world, right? Another time. The values were very different,” she comments. “I thought it was funny that a guy once commented [no vídeo] and said: ‘At 24, he already had a good job, he had a car, he was a serious guy. And today, those who are 24 years old are only 24 years old’. Anyway, it was a very different generation”.

Upon realizing that the videos of his participation had gone viral on the internet, Osvaldo began to interact with internet users commenting on his participation. He was even found by one of the participants who received his “no” in the video.

“He ended up finding me on Instagram and we spoke, it was very interesting. Rita, she said: ‘I got a no, but I’m fine here’. Social networks are fantastic”, says Osvaldo.

But if social networks allow these encounters, they also showed Osvaldo the downside of going viral. He even posted some videos of how he was currently on his YouTube channel, which were later removed. “Some people make such nasty comments that I thought it best to take these videos down.”
