As a promise for returning from Paredão, the participant Beatriz Reis had repercussions on social media when she was scolded by the BBB 24 production team for customizing her bikinis with leftover oranges and bananas . The sister was warned about the danger that fruit peels can pose to the skin.
To CNN, the dermatologist and member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) Michele Kreuz explains: “The main danger of fruit peels coming into contact with human skin is the risk of phytophotodermatitis an intense inflammatory reaction that can appear after contact, followed by exposure to solar radiation, and can appear within the first 24 hours.”
As a result, the skin may experience a intense redness , bubbles and even, severe burns . “We observe this reaction mainly with lemon, orange and tangerine, but papaya and pineapple can also cause a similar reaction of lesser intensity”, says Michele.
According to Ana Carolina Sumam who holds the title of specialist from SBD, “these fruits contain furocoumarins or psoralens which are substances that increase our skin’s sensitivity to the sun,” he explains.
“When the patient touches this fruit to the skin and is in an open environment, exposed to solar radiation, a burn occurs and then the skin tends to become stained”, adds the professional.
As for the banana peels used by the reality participant, Ana Carolina also guarantees: “Bananas are not a fruit that usually causes phytophotodermatitis”.
In Michele's view, in general, fruit peels have no benefits for the skin. “Banana peel may have some benefit in relieving some itching, but does this benefit outweigh the risks?”, he reflects.
“My position as a dermatologist is against this type of practice. There are more modern and safer ones”, he adds.
