Find out what the most common traffic violations are in SP

A survey carried out by the São Paulo State Traffic Department (Detran-SP), released this Monday (30), shows the most common traffic violations in the state. Data indicates that cell phone while driving, lack of licensing, irregular documentation and not wearing a seat belt are the most common infractions.

Between January and August 2024, there were more than 2.3 million fines imposed by the state traffic agency. During the same period in 2023, there were 1.9 million fines.

In the ranking of fines in 2024, the lack of vehicle registration within 30 days, upon transfer of ownership, appears in first place . In this modality, 805,850 fines were applied, compared to 698,995 in 2023.

Subsequently, among the most recurrent infractions, driving a vehicle that is not properly licensed comes in second place with 313,251 occurrences. In 2023, the same act generated 304,652 annotations.

More than 167 thousand infractions for handling, holding or using a cell phone while driving were registered in 2024, compared to 149,484 in 2023.

Among the four most common infractions is the absence of a seat belt, which generated 131,030 fines. Numbers for 2023 have not been released.

Consequences of using a cell phone while driving

The impairment of reflexes, with the reduction of the driver’s agility, impacts the driver’s ability to react, if there is a need for a sudden maneuver. The same risk applies to the appearance of an alpha or someone suddenly. Inattention increases the possibility of accidents. This is one of the main impacts, in practice, points out Detran.

Anyone caught driving while holding or handling a cell phone ends up being penalized with a very serious infraction and a fine of R$293.47, in addition to seven points on their National Driving License.

The Brazilian traffic code specifies the prohibition of talking on the phone while driving, regardless of whether it is via earphone, hands-free or via Bluetooth. The difference is that in the last two modalities, the driver is subject to a medium infraction, the penalty for which will be a fine of R$ 130.16 and the application of four points on the driver’s license.
