O Cannes Film Festival officially began last Tuesday night (14), when celebrities walked the red carpet at the luxurious Grand Theater Lumiere to pay homage to the Hollywood actress Meryl Streep .
The actress was one of the personalities honored by the festival this year.
Afterwards, some of cinema's biggest names settled in to watch this year's opening film, “The Second Act ”
The cast of the French comedy, including Lea Seydoux and Vincent Lindon, was joined by the actress Jane Fonda by the model Heidi Klum and for Messi the canine star of the 2023 Palme d’Or winner, “Anatomy of a Fall “.
This year's festival jury, led by Greta Gerwig was also present.
Before the ceremony, French singer Zaho de Sagazan sang “Modern Love “, in David Bowie in the halls of the theater to pay homage to Gerwig's black and white dance scene in “Frances Ha “.
Gerwig sang along and seemed visibly touched by the performance when Sagazan's Zaho came on stage to kiss her hand.
The audience applauded Streep for a few minutes as she took the stage in a simple white dress and black-rimmed glasses, greeted by French actress Juliette Binoche in a red dress.
“You changed the way we see women in the world of cinema,” said Binoche, who tried to control her breathing as she cried during her speech.
Streep – whose long list of films includes “Death Becomes Her,” “Mamma Mia!” and “The Iron Lady” – listed the people she would like to thank.
She also commented on the montage with several films from her career. “It’s like looking out the window of a bullet train,” she said.
“My mother, who was usually right about everything, said to me, 'Meryl, honey, you'll see. Everything goes by so quickly. Very fast'. And so it was. Except for my speech,” Streep joked.
