Before dying, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI uttered in his last words the expression of devotion “Lord, I love you”. The speech would have been said at 3 am on the day of death.
The revelation of these final moments in the life of Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger was revealed by his private secretary, German Archbishop Georg Ganswein to the Vatican press. Benedict XVI died on December 31 of last year, aged 95.
According to the ANSA news agency, Archbishop Georg said that the expression used by the pope emeritus was heard by nurses who took turns in his room. That same morning, Ganswein said, they prayed through the morning, though Benedict XVI couldn’t follow aloud because he was already out of breath.
In the publication in which he released the last words of the pope emeritus, the private secretary of Benedict XVI also reported that he and other people who cared for the pontiff accompanied the last moments. The report even externalizes that breathing became more difficult and death came at 9:34 am.
The information of Benedict XVI’s death was first passed on to Pope Francis, who would have gone to the place, made a blessing and left the premises.
