THE Venice Film Festival 2024 started this Wednesday (28) and will run until September 7. Several Brazilian participants have been confirmed, both in the official selection and in the jury of the 81st edition.
In total, five Brazilian productions will be shown at the event, one of which is in the official selection competing for the Golden Lion.
In addition to the productions shown, Brazil is also present among the experts who vote for the title that wins the top prize of the festival. The filmmaker Kleber Mendonca Son (“Bacurau” and “Aquarius”) is part of this year’s jury, chaired by the French actress Isabelle Huppert .
As the films are debuting on the awards circuit, there is still no information about the theatrical release of the works.

“I’m Still Here”, by Walter Salles
The main Brazilian title at the festival, the new film by the renowned Brazilian filmmaker is in the official selection of the 81st edition of the Venice Film Festival and is competing for the Golden Lion .
The plot is inspired by the book of the same name by Marcelo Rubens Paiva which tells the story of her family. Set in Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, the film introduces the Paiva family: the father, Rubens, the mother, Eunice, and their five children. One day they suffer a violent and arbitrary act that will change the course of their lives forever. Eunice is forced to reinvent herself and chart a new destiny for herself and her children.
Cast: Fernanda Torres, Selton Mello, Fernanda Montenegro.

“Apocalypse in the Tropics”, by Petra Costa
New documentary from the director of “Democracy in Vertigo” talks about the influence of evangelical Christianity on far-right politics in Brazil. The title is in the Out of Competition selection.

“My Mother Is a Cow”, by Moara Passoni
In the Short Horizons section, there is a fictional work about a 12-year-old girl left by her family on the edge of the burning Brazilian Pantanal. Amidst the volatile natural world and the looming threat of a deadly jaguar, love manifests itself in unexpected ways, the synopsis reads.
Cast: Louisa Bastos, Helena Albergaria, Loving No.

One of the members of the section’s jury is the Brazilian actress and director Barbara Peace . In addition, she is one of those responsible for choosing the big winner of the “Lion of the Future – Luigi De Laurentiis” award, which honors the festival’s best debut film – both from the main selection and the Horizons section.

“The Time and Turn of Augusto Matraga”, by Roberto Santos
An adaptation of the homonymous short story by Guimarães Rosa will be shown at the Veneza Classics exhibition. The plot follows Augusto Matraga, a violent farmer, is betrayed by his wife and is ambushed by his enemies and left for dead. He is saved and turns to religion. Augusto meets Joãozinho Bem Bem, a gangster who makes him experience an internal conflict, instigating the violent instincts of his personality.
Cast: Leonardo Villa, Joffre Soares, Maria Ribeiro.

“40 Days Without the Sun” by João Carlos Furia
Brazilian virtual reality animation is in the Venezia Imersiva section. Through the eyes of a child, the audience will follow the emotional journey of a family when the mother suffers a miscarriage. It is 40 days of darkness inside their home until they embrace life and death so that the family can move forward.
