Among internet searches, the most searched for samba schools are those that are members of the Rio de Janeiro league’s Special Group. Imperatriz Leopoldinense, Acadêmicos do Salgueiro and Estação Primeira de Mangueira were the most searched for on Google in Brazil in 2023, according to a consultation on the Google Trends platform carried out by CNN .
The three appear very close in the search averages and had their peak in the same week, between the 19th and 25th of February this year, the time when this year’s Carnival took place. Portela appears in fourth place and, closing the top 5, Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, Grande Rio and Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel are tied.
The most searched for during the week of revelry was Imperatriz Leopoldinense, who became champion with the plot “O perreio do goat that the Excommunicated treated with ill will and the Holy One did not give refuge”, after enduring a fast of 21 carnivals, under the led by carnival artist Leandro Vieira.

Two of the most traditional schools in Rio’s festivities, Salgueiro and Mangueira, did not achieve great results in the 2023 Carnival. Green and Pink, which is the second biggest champion in history, came in fourth place; Salgueiro, in turn, is left out of the Parade of Champions for the first time since 2006.
The two, however, remained ahead of Imperatriz for almost the entire year, which may help explain the fact that the three associations ended with similar averages.
Salgueiro dominates Rio de Janeiro and Roraima
Land of revelry, Rio de Janeiro is dominated by Salgueiro. The school in the Andaraí neighborhood, also in the north of the city, has 38% of searches for the three schools in Rio de Janeiro. Imperatriz comes second with 34% and Mangueira only got 28%.
The school of names like Viviane Araújo, MC Rebecca, Xande de Pilares, Almir Guineto and Fernando Pamplona also led the searches in two other states: Pernambuco (42%) and Roraima (54%).
In the case of the first, there may be some data confusion, since a city in the state is called Salgueiro.
The dominance in Roraima can be explained by the fact that the Salgueiro plot for 2024 is “Hutukara”, which promises the story of the Yanomami, who occupy the largest Indigenous Land in Brazil, located in the state.
Imperatriz Leopoldinense also dominates three states: Amazonas (40%), Ceará (36%) and Paraíba (36%). Mangueira is the leader in the other 21 units of the federation, with emphasis on Amapá, where it accumulates 64% of searches in the last 12 months.
