Data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) indicate that between January 1st and August 25th, 107,133 fire outbreaks were recorded in the country in 2024. This number represents an increase of 75% compared to the same period in 2023.
The institute has compiled a ranking of the states that recorded the most fires this year. Mato Grosso is in first place with 20,725 fires. In last place is Amapá, which recorded only 17 fires in the same period.
In the top five positions, after MT, are Pará, Amazonas, Mato Grosso do Sul and Tocantins. The difference between the leader and the fifth placed is what is impressive. There are 13 thousand more fire outbreaks. The difference is almost double, when we compare the data between the fifth and twenty-seventh (last placed).
Numbers in the top 5
The first-placed state, Mato Grosso, showed a growth of 109%, comparing the first eight months of the year, in relation to 2023. Last year, the state had registered 9,887 outbreaks. The increase was also recorded in Pará, which occupies the second position. In 2023, there were 9,330 records, about 55% less than in 2024.
Amazonas, which appears in third place, recorded 6,581 outbreaks in 2023, an increase of 82% compared to this year’s numbers. In Mato Grosso do Sul and Tocantins, the increase is also significant. In MS, it was an incredible 605%, the largest percentage increase among the 26 states and the Federal District. In Tocantins, the increase of 46%, took from 5,004 to 7,308 records.
Largest percentage increases and decreases
After Mato Grosso do Sul, mentioned above, São Paulo was the state with the highest percentage increase in fire outbreaks. The state of São Paulo recorded a 378% increase, going from 1,104 to 5,280 fire outbreaks. Next, Roraima appears in third place with a 254% increase, from 1,314 to 4,663 outbreaks. Rio de Janeiro recorded a 153% increase in outbreaks, with 686 this year compared to 271 in the previous period.
The data, however, registered a drop in some regions. The last place in the ranking is exactly the state with the biggest drop, around 78% fewer outbreaks, in Amapá, going from 79 to 17, so far. In Piauí, there were 28% fewer, with 3,221 in 2023 and 2,294 in 2024. In Paraíba and Rio Grande do Sul, the drop rate was the same with 21%, going from 159 to 125, and from 1,408 to 1,106, respectively.
Data by region
