A survey carried out by QR Asset Management pointed to axie infinity and the sandbox as the cryptocurrencies that appreciated the most in the last year. The study analyzes the top 40 digital currencies by market capitalization according to Messari.io.
Axie is the digital asset used by users to buy axies (game characters that have the same name as the cryptocurrency), in order to build a team and battle other users.
“Axie Infinity was perhaps the sensation of the year and consolidated once and for all the “play-to-earn” model for blockchain-based games”, says Theodoro Fleury, manager of QR Asset Management.
The sandbox is the cryptocurrency used in the game (also of the same name) that allows users to create virtual terrains that can contribute to the construction of the metaverse.
“The Sandbox game had a meteoric rise in the last quarter of the year after Facebook announced its branding change and annual investments in the order of US$ 10 billion in the metaverse”, explains Fleury.

Nothing bad
QR Asset’s analysis also pinpointed the worst performing cryptocurrencies over the past year. The final result pointed to a positive scenario for the digital assets market, as litecoin, which occupied the worst position, still appreciated by 26.41%.
Shortly thereafter, bitcoin cash took the second-worst valuation position in 2021, at just 35.11%. It is worth noting that the difference between this asset and bitcoin is the processing time of the blocks and the size allowed by each network.
The ranking lantern is led by forks or alternatives of the original bitcoin. “These protocols have fallen into disuse, as the market is focused on more practical use cases, such as speculation with NFT’s, or interaction with DeFi protocols (decentralized finance)”, says Fleury.
This is the second year in a row that these attempts to copy bitcoin have been repeated in the lower half of the table.
