New Jersey Democratic Senator Cory Booker broke the longest speech record in the modern history of the US Senate Plenary after speaking for 25 hours and 5 minutes, warning about the damage that, according to him, President Donald Trump’s administration is inflicting Americans.
Booker, 55, surpassed the speech of late Senator Strom Thurmond, who lasted 24 hours and 18 minutes in 1957.
He began the speech at 7 pm, local time, on Monday (31) with a promise to maintain his protest while “physically capable”, ending only on Tuesday (1st) at night.
Booker, who has been in the House since 2013, is the first American black to represent New Jersey in the Senate and is one of five black senators currently serving in the 100 -member chamber.
The politician was born in the north of New Jersey and graduated in Sociology and Political Science at Stanford University, where he also wrote for the student newspaper.
Booker was mayor of the city of Newark for seven years, from 2006 to 2013, being elected to represent New Jersey in the US Senate in October 2013.
In November 2014, he was reelected for a complete six -year term.
The senator had plans to compete for the White House in 2020, but did not take forward, later supporting Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden, who was later elected, defeating Donald Trump in 2021.
Reelected in 2020, the Democrat is in a mandate as by 2027.
Still in 2020, Booker found that he is a cousin of Drag Queen Rupaul Charles, creator and host of the drag Race program, after participating in the program “Finding Your Roots” from PBS.
Record speech
The speech of the senator who lasted two days exceeded a 1957 record, by politician Strom Thurmond who had the record of the longest speech when he spoke in the plenary for 24 hours and 18 minutes to oppose the act of civil rights.
In his speech, he criticized Trump government actions and said the United States live a crisis.
In an excerpt from Booker speech said that “in just 71 days, the president of the United States inflicted so much damage to the security of Americans; financial stability; the essential foundations of our democracy.”
“These are not normal times in America. And they should not be treated as such in the Senate of the United States,” he exclaimed.
The Democrat cannot give in to the space for a break, to sit or use the bathroom because it would allow the president to continue the Senate business.
One of Booker’s advisors told CNN Around the 15 -hour mark that the senator had passed on to his team that he was “feeling good.” He took a brief break for the House’s prayer at noon, without sitting, and then kept talking.
In recent years, the House has seen a series of marathon speeches mounted by senators, including: Jeff Merkley against Neil Gorsuch in 2017; Chris Murphy on Arms Control in 2016; Rand Paul on National Security Agency Surveillance Programs in 2015; and Ted Cruz against Affordable Care Act 2013.
