Senator Marco Rubio should be nominated by President-elect Donald Trump for the position of Secretary of State, according to a source reported on Monday (11). Rubio was considered to be a candidate for vice president on the Republican ticket this year — but the chosen one was JD Vance.
Rubio was born in Florida and, if nominated, would be the first Latino to hold the position. He is the son of Cuban immigrants and has aggressive positions regarding US foreign policy and its geopolitical adversaries, such as China, Iran and Cuba.
He spent more than ten years focused on defending the “China threat” theory, but the senator has softened some opinions to strengthen relations with Trump – who advocates that the US spend less on wars. Since being considered for Trump’s ticket, he has made it clear that he wants to participate in the government.
Marco Rubio, 53, has experience in foreign policy and serves on the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Foreign Relations Committee.
Relationship with Trump
In 2016, the senator was a pre-candidate for the Republican Party and ran against Trump in the party’s primaries. However, after the businessman won the primaries in Florida, he dropped out of the race.
At the end of Trump’s first-term campaign, Rubio publicly attacked the president-elect, saying he would not “make America great. He will turn America orange,” also mocking the size of Trump’s hands and calling him a “con man” as he competed to take over the Republican Party.
After the episode, he began to strengthen ties within the party and worked in the Senate on significant policies for the US, such as legislation that would block tax credits for electric vehicle batteries produced with Chinese technology and questioning the director of the FBI — the investigative agency US federal authorities — about Beijing’s influence on TikTok.
What does he think about war?
Rubio has said in recent interviews that Ukraine needs to pursue a negotiated deal with Russia rather than focusing on regaining all the territory that Vladimir Putin’s country seized over the past decade.
He was also one of 15 Republican senators to vote against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine approved in April.
