Find out who Pedro Guimarães is, who resigned from the presidency of Caixa Econômica Federal

Former president of Caixa Econômica Federal since 2019, Pedro Guimarães came under investigation by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) after allegations of sexual harassment by employees of the financial institution. Guimarães resigned this Wednesday (29).

Before becoming president of Caixa, Guimarães was a senior partner at two banks, BTG Pactual, between 2005 and 2010, and Banco Plural, between 2011 and 2018. Since 2019, he has been chairman of the boards of Caixa Seguridade and ELO. , and in addition to the presidency, he holds a vacancy on Caixa’s board of directors.

Guimarães holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ), where he graduated in 1992. He holds a master’s degree in economics from Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV-RJ) and the University of Rochester. At the American institution, he also obtained his doctorate in economics.

The economist also has a specialization in Negotiation and Decision-Making Strategies from the University of Chicago, in Microeconomics and Corporate Finance from the London School of Economics and in Dynamic Economics, Microeconomics, Mathematical Economics and Statistics and Probability from IMPA-RJ.

He assumed the presidency of Caixa Econômica Federal on January 3, 2019, nominated for the position by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The institution offers a number of services, including banking, and is responsible for the Fundo de Garantia do Tempo de Serviço (FGTS) and payments for Auxílio Brasil and other financial aid programs, such as the one implemented during the pandemic.

On Caixa’s website, Guimarães is described as a person with “20 years of experience in the financial market, having coordinated several operations in the capital market, including initial public offerings (IPOs), subsequent public offerings (FOs), debt management, mergers and acquisitions (M&As) and company restructurings.

The former president of Caixa is considered one of the closest assistants to the Chief Executive. He often participates in public events alongside him and in live broadcasts on the president’s social networks.

In December 2021, the president of Caixa was even mentioned as a possible candidate for vice president on the ticket for Bolsonaro’s re-election, according to the analyst at CNN Gustavo Uribe.

The move would be part of an effort to regain support in the business segment. Recently, however, the name of General Walter Braga Netto was flagged by Bolsonaro as his running mate.

The complaints against Pedro Guimarães were revealed by the “Metrópoles” portal, and the MPF investigation was confirmed by the CNN .

In a note to the portal, Caixa informed that “it is not aware of the complaints presented by the vehicle”. THE CNN allies of President Bolsonaro had already indicated that Guimarães would be fired this Wednesday.

The quick dismissal is to try to avoid contamination of Bolsonaro’s re-election campaign.
