Find out why Putin should not participate in the BRICS summit in Brazil

Russian President Vladimir Putin should not participate in the BRICS summit, which takes place in the city of Rio de Janeiro on July 6 and 7 this year, due to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The ICC announced the order against Vladimir Putin in March 2023 for alleged war crimes during the conflict in Ukraine.

Brazil, which is a signatory to the Treaty of Rome, would be forced to arrest the Russian leader at the time he arrived in the country.

Although Russia is part of the BRICS, Putin, as well as at the G20 meeting that took place in November last year, should send a representative to this year’s summit based by Brazil.

The acronym BRICS formed by the initials of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa represent the main emerging economies of the world.

The Kremlin leader was represented by Sergei Lavrov, Foreign Minister, during last year’s meeting, it is expected that he will fulfill the role of representative again this year.

Brazil assumed the rotary presidency of the block in 2025 and expects to receive at least 20 heads of state that make up BRICS, among members and partners.
