Fines for shops & restaurants that waste energy

It is certainly the most successful ad to avoid energy waste, with a slogan that says a lot about the French. A man runs madly through an illuminated house turning off the lights, from room to room and shouting “we’re not Versailles here”.

The video that has a great impact is of Total Energies, a subsidiary of the oil company Total, which in 2003 ended the monopoly of EDF, (French PPC), and is today the leading supplier of electricity and natural gas in France.

The hunt against unnecessary consumption has begun in earnest in France, which despite its nuclear power, is seeing rising electricity bills after agreeing to comply with Europe and align electricity prices with gas prices, angering many.

And fines…

Efforts to avoid energy waste are summarized in a government program entitled “Sobriété énergétique”, loosely translated as “Energy Sobriety Program”.

The first two implementation measures combined with sanctions were announced yesterday in the Sunday Newspaper, by the Minister of Energy Transition, Anies Panie-Runasse.

One concerns the bright advertisements of shops that should be switched off from one in the evening to six in the morning, with the exception of airports and train stations. With the second, it prohibits stores from having their doors open while the air conditioning or heating is working. The fine will reach 750 euros.
