Finland will begin gradually easing restrictions on Covid-19 from mid-February, Prime Minister Sanaa Martin said today, following an all-day cabinet meeting.
Finland will also suspend health checks at the Schengen area after January, as the Finnish Ministry of Health said earlier that they were not helping to curb the spread of the pandemic, Martin said.
In December, the government had decided that all travelers to Finland would have to show a Covid-19 vaccination or recovery certificate and a recent negative test.
At the same time, the country’s Health Institute said today that Omicron-type infections would peak in Finland in the coming weeks, not months.
In addition, the Finnish Prime Minister said that her government is leaning towards changing the criteria for her vaccination passport, but it will be legally difficult to do so.
“The government wants to do this, but it is very difficult in terms of fundamental rights,” Marin said, referring to people who could not get the vaccine or had Covid disease without a formal diagnosis.
According to the government’s new plan, gyms, swimming pools and other recreational areas will remain closed and restaurant opening hours will be limited until mid-February.
