Finland is “extremely likely” to join NATO after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the country’s European Affairs Minister told Sky News.
In particular, Ms Tytti Tuppurainen told the British network that “the people of Finland have already decided” and that the polls showed strong support for joining the Alliance.
“At this point I would say it is extremely high (support),” he said, adding that “no decision has been made yet.”
Ms Tuppurainen added that Russia’s “savage” war in Ukraine was “a wake-up call to all of us”.
“Not just for us Finns. It has to do with border security in Europe as a whole,” he said.
Ms. Tuppurainen’s statements to skynews follow the joint press conference given yesterday by the Prime Ministers of Finland and Sweden, Sana Marin and Magdalena Anderson, in which the Finnish Prime Minister said that the country is ready to take the decision NATO membership “within weeks”.
At the same time, yesterday the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet spoke about a historic turn of the ruling Social Democrats, who now support the country’s membership in NATO.
The party has been negative in the debate for decades, but according to party sources cited by Svenska Dagbladet, it will apply for the country to join NATO in June, at the next Alliance Summit.
It is noted that for its part, Russia warned yesterday, Thursday, that if the two countries join NATO, then it should strengthen its defense and that there could be no more talk of a “nuclear-free” Baltic.
