Russia may cut off gas supplies to Finland this week, the state-owned Finnish company Gasum said today as part of a confrontation between Moscow and the West over Russia’s demand for gas in rubles.
In a statement, Gasum said it had no information on the matter from Russia’s Gazprom Export but was preparing for a scenario in which Moscow would cut off supplies late Friday night or Saturday.
Gazprom did not respond to a request for comment.
According to Interfax, Russian gas exports to Finland ranged around 3.2 million cubic meters per day from January 1 to March 16.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has called on countries he describes as “unfriendly” to pay for gas in rubles. Supplies to Bulgaria and Poland were halted in April when the two countries refused to pay in rubles. Gasum said earlier that it would not accept Gazprom Export’s demand to pay in rubles and that there was an increased risk of supply disruptions.
Finland imports most of the gas it uses from neighboring Russia. However, gas accounts for only 5% of the country’s annual energy consumption.
