Helsinki announced today that it had made the “historic” decision to supply arms to Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of the country.
Finland will provide military assistance to Ukraine. “This is a historic decision for Finland,” Prime Minister Sanaa Marin told a news conference today.
The mission will include 2,500 assault rifles, 150,000 bullets, 1,500 anti-tank weapons and 70,000 packages of food, Defense Minister Andy Kaikonen added.
“Anti-tank weapons can be used to fight armored vehicles,” Kaikonen told a news conference after a government meeting on Monday.
The decision marks a change of policy for Finland, which maintains the image of a non-aligned country since the Soviet Union in 1956 abandoned a naval base it had leased to southern Finland after World War II.
Kaikonen hinted that the government was scrapping Finland’s long-standing policy of not supplying weapons to war zones on Sunday, when he said the government was considering sending material to Ukraine that could be used to kill.
The Scandinavian government also decided on Sunday that it would supply helmets, bulletproof vests and first aid equipment to Ukraine and gave Estonia permission to donate weapons to Ukraine that used to belong to Finland.
