Finland: Parliament adopted laws to strengthen border security with Russia

Finland’s parliament has adopted legislation that would allow fences to be built on the country’s border with Russia and the 1,300km long border to be closed to asylum seekers in exceptional circumstances.

The preparedness bill, although contested over EU asylum rules, was adopted by a supermajority, allowing parliament to fast-track laws amid fears that Russia could retaliate against the plans of Finland to join NATO.

This would also allow the government to decide to build fences or other types of walls near the Finnish border and direct all asylum applications to one or several border crossings, such as airports.
