Finnish President Sauli Niinistστε is expected to officially announce his position today on his country’s possible candidacy for membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as has Prime Minister Sana Marin.
Their announcement is expected to be joint and will take place around 10:00 (local time and Greek time), according to the presidency. Analysts anticipate that he will be in favor of NATO membership.
Mr Niniste, a regular interlocutor of Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years, as well as Social Democrat Marin, have made it clear that Finland has decided to join the Atlantic Alliance following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Its accession, like that of Sweden, which is also expected to apply for membership, is expected to take place in the summer.
