Finland says it is ready to accept refugees from Ukraine

Finland is ready to accept refugees from Ukraine, Prime Minister Sana Marin said today, strongly condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Marin estimated that there may be a large number of refugees from Ukraine who may try to flee to the EU.

“The Finnish Interior Ministry, for its part, is ready to accept refugees from Ukraine,” she told reporters.

Both Marin and Finnish President Sauli Niinisto strongly condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Despite previous warnings this morning (the attack) shocked us all and we sympathize with the Ukrainian people,” he said.

Niinisto ruled out the possibility of Finland reacting to the developments by immediately submitting a request for NATO membership.

“In Finland we see comments on a request today and accession tomorrow. These sensitive reactions are understandable, but they can not really work in the real world,” he said.
