The European Union’s move to suspend an agreement to facilitate visas for Russian citizens because of Moscow’s war in Ukraine is a step “in the right direction” if implemented by member states, Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said on Wednesday.
“This is moving in the right direction, but once again we have seen that so far there are many words and few actions,” Haavisto told reporters, adding that the situation should be reassessed within a few months.
Finland and other EU members that share a land border with Russia, including the Baltic states and Poland, have called for an EU-wide ban on tourist visas for Russians.
“When Russia invades Ukraine and we accept refugees from Ukraine and try to help Ukraine in every way, it’s not a time for vacations and luxury tourism (for Russians),” Haavisto added.
Last week, Finland’s largest daily newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, reported in an article that there were 1,400 cars with Russian license plates parked at Helsinki’s main airport, many of them luxury cars, prompting a strong reaction from Finns.
