The Finnish customs service is preparing to sell 1,981 BTC that were confiscated from drug-related criminals. Sale date has not yet been determined.
According to the Helsingin Sanomat publication, the Finnish Customs Service plans to sell 1,981 BTC that have been confiscated from traffickers in illegal substances. At the current exchange rate, the value of the confiscated BTC exceeds $ 77 million.
Finland set the rules for storing and selling confiscated bitcoins back in February 2018. In the spring of this year, the country’s customs service was resolving the issue of the confiscated 1,666 BTC – the authorities feared that in the event of a sale, crypto assets could end up in the hands of criminals.
Fears that BTC will again fall into the hands of drug dealers still hamper the sale of cryptoassets. However, regulators plan to resolve this issue in the near future.
Finnish Customs Chief Financial Officer Pekka Pylkkänen said the agency is “selling virtual currencies” following talks with the Finance Ministry. The date of the sale of bitcoins has not yet been determined.
The 1,981 BTC seized may be partly related to the recent operation to close the darknet market Sipulimarket – in December, its assets were confiscated by Finnish customs in cooperation with Europol and the Polish police.
