Finnish president empties Erdogan: In April he told me he was in favor of joining NATO

The Finnish president dismissed Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the issue of Finland’s accession to NATO, saying that the Turkish president had told him in a telephone conversation that he was positive about the move.

This time, in an interview with Ilta Sanomat, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto stated that in a telephone conversation he had with the Turkish President on April 4, Mr. Erdogan had expressed his positive attitude towards Finland’s decision to join the NATO. More specifically, Niinisto said: “At the end of a long discussion I had with him, he said that in case of application for NATO membership, he would take a positive stance”, adding that Mr. Erdogan had said that he would evaluate the possibility of membership favorably.

He points out that: “There was no possibility of misinterpretation”.

Niinisto claims that Foreign Minister Peka Haavisto also had a contact, on May 5, with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşo .lu, which showed that there is no problem with the possibility of the country joining NATO.

In fact, the Finnish president clarified in his country’s news agency that the issue of arms exports was not set as a condition for Finland’s accession to NATO, “but was a separate discussion.”
