Finnish president holds ‘open and direct’ talks with Erdogan

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said on Saturday that he had “open and clear” talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to discuss Finland’s bid for NATO membership, according to Reuters.

Erdogan has publicly questioned whether Finland and Sweden should be allowed to join the military alliance.

“I have stated that as NATO allies, Finland and Turkey will be committed to each other’s security and thus our relationship will become stronger,” Ninisto wrote on Twitter after the phone call.

“Finland condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. The close dialogue continues.”

A statement from the Turkish Presidency said that the Turkish President said that Ankara expects respect and support for its fight against terrorist organizations that threaten national security and its people.
