Finnish President: Russia’s response to Ukraine is reminiscent of Soviet threats of 1939

Its president Φινλανδίας compared her treatment today on Saturday Of Ukraine from Russia in an attempt by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin to threaten and divide Finland before invading in 1939, according to Reuters.

“Everything that is happening in Ukraine, everything that is happening in the Western world right now, reminds me of what happened in Finland,” President Sauli Niinisto told the Munich Security Conference.

“Stalin thought he would divide the nation and it was easy to invade Finland. The complete opposite happened. “The people are united and we see the same in Ukraine.”

Finland, part of the Russian Empire from 1809 to 1917, resisted an initial Soviet invasion in 1939. The Scandinavian country later sided with Nazi Germany for much of World War II and lost part of its pre-war territory by the Soviet Union in peace then.

During the Cold War, Finland was neutral between the West and the Soviet Union.
