The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and the Butantan Institute are present in the ranking of the 15 main world producers of vaccines, according to a survey by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The report “Global Vaccine Market” considers requirements associated with billing in 2021. In the document, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom states that although Covid-19 has highlighted the relevance of vaccines, it has also highlighted inequalities in access to immunizers.
“Low-income countries struggle to access vaccines that are in demand around the world. For example, the human papillomavirus vaccine, which protects against cervical cancer, has been introduced in only 41% of low-income countries, while saving lives in 83% of high-income countries. While prices tend to be staggered according to income, more efforts are needed to alleviate price disparities,” says Adhanom.
According to the WHO report, Butantan is among the 10 vaccine producers with the highest revenues, excluding vaccines against Covid-19, and is responsible for 1% of the market’s global revenues. In the analyzed period, the institute provided a total of 100 million doses of vaccines such as flu, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, dTpa (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) and rabies. All revenue obtained is used for research and development of new immunizers, such as dengue and chikungunya.
For Butantan, inclusion in the document helps to consolidate the institute’s position as a global producer of immunobiologicals and reflects its expansion beyond Brazilian territory, exemplified by actions such as the recent export of flu vaccines to countries such as Ecuador and Uruguay .
“It is an important result that puts Butantan even more in evidence, mainly as the main producer in Latin America. This is mainly due to the supply of influenza vaccine doses for the vaccination campaigns in Uruguay, Ecuador and Nicaragua, which took place this year”, says the director of Strategic Partnerships and New Business at Butantan, Tiago Rocca, in a statement.
Fiocruz, through the Institute of Technology in Immunobiologicals (Bio-Manguinhos), appears among the 15 producers of immunizers.
The foundation’s vaccine portfolio comprises 12 products, including vaccines against Covid-19, yellow fever, polio, and the triple viral (measles, mumps and rubella).
On average, 120 million doses are delivered annually to the National Immunization Program (PNI) of the Ministry of Health. With the coronavirus vaccine, this number increases even more. From 2017 to 2021, more than 701 million doses of vaccines were delivered to the Brazilian population.
