Fiocruz becomes a reference in the analysis of samples of suspected monkey pox

The Enterovirus Laboratory of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz) will be responsible for analyzing samples suspected of smallpox infection from monkeys that come from the state of Rio de Janeiro and from the entire Northeast region of the country. The designation took place after the institution was named, this Wednesday (15), as a reference laboratory of the Ministry of Health in monkeypox.

Now the IOC will join three other reference centers in laboratory diagnosis in the country, which are the Ezequiel Dias Foundation, the Adolfo Lutz Institute and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), through the Molecular Biology of Virus and of Molecular Virology.

This Wednesday, Brazil confirmed two more cases of monkeypox. Among them, the first in the state of Rio de Janeiro. In addition to this, there are three other cases in São Paulo and one in Rio Grande do Sul. No deaths have been recorded as a result of the disease in the country so far. The case in Rio was detected on Tuesday (14) by the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IBCCF/UFRJ).

The Enterovirus Laboratory of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz), which has been operating for 60 years, is dedicated to the study of poliomyelitis and viral meningitis. The laboratory is also active in the virological surveillance of acute flaccid paralysis, aseptic meningitis and meningoencephalitis.

The IOC also held, on June 9 and 10, a course with the seal of the World Health Organization (WHO) for training in laboratory diagnosis for the detection of smallpox. Professionals from seven other Latin American countries participated in the activities at Fiocruz’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

Monkeypox is an infectious disease found mainly in western and central Africa. The transmission of the pathology occurs through direct contact with an infected person who has skin lesions, or through droplets of saliva.

Initial symptoms are similar to the flu, such as fever, chills, exhaustion, headache, and muscle weakness, followed by swelling in the lymph nodes, which help the body fight infection and illness.
