The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) made available, this Tuesday (22), to the Ministry of Health, the first doses of the Covid-19 vaccine produced with the active pharmaceutical ingredient (IFA) 100% national.
The slightly more than 550,000 doses made available already make up the Fiocruz deliveries contracted by the Ministry of Health for 2022. In all, the ministry contracted 105 million doses of the institution’s vaccine for this year, 45 million doses of the national vaccine.
The immunizers will be delivered according to the agreed schedule and demand established by the folder. THE foundation has already produced a quantity of national API equivalent to about 25 million doses of vaccine, of which 2.6 million doses have been bottled, including the 550,000 already available. The others (about 2 million) are in different stages for release.
The Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, participates in a symbolic vaccination event with the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured entirely in Brazil, from the formulation of the active pharmaceutical ingredient to the bottling, by Fiocruz.
“By the end of the year, we have secured more than 500 million doses of vaccine and, with that, we are sure to contain the pandemic character of Covid-19”, said Queiroga.
At the ceremony, the president of Fiocruz, Nísia Trindade Lima, highlighted the importance of the country’s autonomy in the production of the AstraZeneca immunizer and the need for an equal distribution of vaccines between countries.
“In this extremely unequal scenario, there are countries today with a vaccination rate below 1% of their population, while others are already moving towards the fourth dose of the vaccine”, said Nísia.
At the meeting, the Minister of Citizenship, João Roma, recalled the social actions carried out by the federal government throughout the pandemic, including Emergency Aid.
How does vaccine manufacturing work?
The active pharmaceutical ingredient is the raw material of the vaccine, composed of viruses and cells. In the case of the AstraZeneca vaccine, the input is made from the adenovirus that is unable to replicate in the body.
