Fiocruz points to an increase in severe respiratory syndrome among adults in the country

The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) pointed out, this Thursday (12), signs of growth in cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) among the adult population in several Brazilian states from the end of April.

The study published in the new edition of the Infogripe bulletinreferring to epidemiological week 18, from May 1 to 7, is based on data entered in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (Sivep-Gripe) until May 9.

According to the document, the results indicate an interruption in the drop in Covid-19 cases among notifications with a positive result for respiratory viruses, corresponding to 37% in the last four weeks. Most respiratory virus cases are associated with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), with 41.2% of the total SARS from patients undergoing laboratory tests in the last four weeks.

Coordinator of InfoGripe, Fiocruz researcher Marcelo Gomes recommends that the laboratory network across the country pay attention to the proper identification of which viruses are associated with this recent trend change.

“At the moment, cases of Covid-19 continue to be the main cause of SARS among cases with laboratory identification in the adult population. The national SARS curve shows signs of growth in long-term trends [últimas 6 semanas] and short term [últimas 3 semanas]. The estimate is 5.0 [4,3 – 5,8] thousand cases in week 18,” Gomes said in a statement.

The Fiocruz bulletin points out that 17 of the 27 federative units show signs of growth in SARS cases in the long term trend: Acre, Alagoas, Amazonas, Amapá, Ceará, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Pará, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Norte, Rondônia, Roraima, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Tocantins.

In Minas Gerais, there are signs of growth only in the short-term trend. Among the capitals, 17 of the 27 show signs of growth in the long-term trend: Boa Vista (RR), Cuiabá (MT), Curitiba (PR), Florianópolis (SC), Fortaleza (CE), Goiânia (GO), Macapá ( AP), Maceió (AL), Manaus (AM), Palmas (TO), Porto Alegre (RS), Porto Velho (RO), Recife (PE), Rio Branco (AC), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), São Luís (MA) and Vitória (ES).

persistence of symptoms

Two years after being infected with the new coronavirus, half of patients admitted to a hospital in China still have at least one symptom.

The results are from a long-term study involving 1,192 people infected during the first phase of the pandemic in 2020. The findings were published in the scientific journal The Lancet Respiratory Medicine on Wednesday.

While the physical and mental health of patients has improved over time, the analysis suggests that those recovering from Covid-19 still tend to have worse health and quality of life than the general population.

The condition is considered more severe, especially among people who have long-term Covid, who usually still have at least one symptom, including fatigue, shortness of breath and sleep difficulties two years after the initial illness.

The researchers looked at the long-term health impacts of Covid-19 recoveries who underwent hospitalization, as well as issues specific to long-term Covid. They assessed the health of 1,192 participants with the disease admitted to the Jin Yin-tan Hospital in Wuhan, China, between January 7 and May 29, 2020, at six months, 12 months and two years.
