The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation will lay the foundation stone for the memorial at the beginning of August, which alludes to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The launch is scheduled to take place on August 6th, at 10 am, around the lake located next to the main entrance of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation campus, in Manguinhos, in the North Zone of Rio.
The ceremony will mark the beginning of the Fiocruz Covid-19 Memorial project – Science and Health, which will be built in an area of approximately 2,600 square meters, next to the entrance complex on Avenida Brasil, the main connection between the port region and the north and west zones of the city.
The aim of the memorial is to pay tribute to the victims of the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, which left more than 700,000 dead in Brazil.
According to Fiocruz, the initiative creates a protected square in the area close to Avenida Brasil and the main entrance to the campus.
“The white gables that surround the complex are like handkerchiefs that dry tears. The water, which falls like tears, flows towards the lakes, symbolizing transformation and rebirth,” the organization said in a statement explaining the memorial.
