The Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) issued a worrying warning Flu advance in Rio de Janeiro . The Infogipe Bulletin, released by the institution, reveals an alarming increase of 164% in hospitalizations for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SRAG) in the state.
Since the beginning of the year, Rio de Janeiro has registered more than 2,400 hospitalizations by Srag. In the first week of January, 103 people were hospitalized due to the disease. Last month, this number jumped to 272, showing a worrying climbing in the cases.
Main causes and risk groups
According to scientists, the main causing agents of SRAG are the influenza virus and COVID-19. In addition, the researchers warn that Rinovirus has caused a significant number of hospitalizations, especially among children and adolescents.
The data is even more alarming when the profile of the hospitalized people are observed. Approximately half of the hospitalizations are from children under two, highlighting the vulnerability of this age group.
Low adherence to vaccination
Despite the severity of the situation, the influenza vaccination campaign in the state capital faces low adhesion. Only just over 22% of priority groups sought immunization so far, with about 700,000 doses applied.
This number is considered far below the expected by the Municipal Health Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro, highlighting the urgent need for awareness of the importance of vaccination as the main preventive measure against flu and its complications.
Given this scenario, health authorities reinforce the appeal for the population, especially priority groups, look for vaccination posts and immunize themselves against flu, thus contributing to curb the advance of the disease and reducing the number of hospitalizations in the state.
