Fiocruz warns of the flu advance; Rio has low adherence to vaccination

The number of hospitalizations for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SRAG) has increased consistently in recent weeks, according to Fiocruz’s Infogipe Bulletin. The most recent survey, referring to the period from April 13 to 19, recorded 272 hospitalizations – a 164% growth over the first week of January, when 103 cases were counted.

Since the beginning of 2025, the state has accumulated 2,441 hospitalizations by SRAG. The main causing agents are the viruses of influenza and COVID-19, highlighting the recent advance of the flu. “Scientists continue to observe a trend of increasing cases associated with influenza virus in several states,” says Tatiana Portella, a researcher at Fiocruz and a member of the Infogipe program.

Also according to the expert, Rinovirus has also caused a significant number of hospitalizations, especially among children and adolescents from 2 to 14 years. Although this growth already shows signs of slowdown, the alert remains. “It is essential that all risk group members have influenza vaccination up to date,” Tatiana reinforces.

In the capital, the influenza vaccination campaign began in early April, but adhesion has been low. Only more than 22% of priority groups sought immunization so far, with less than 700,000 doses applied – a number considered far below expected by the Municipal Health Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro.

The data concern even more when observing the profile of hospitalizations. Almost half of SRAG patients in 2025 – 45.71% – are children under two years old. Given this scenario, experts and health authorities reinforce the urgency of vaccination as a way to contain the advance of respiratory diseases in the state.
