Fiocruz will deliver the first batch of 100% national vaccine in February

The first immunizations against Covid-19 with 100% national production should be bottled this month and delivered to the Ministry of Health in February, said Fiocruz on Friday (7).

The announcement took place on the same day that Anvisa approved the registration of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (IFA) produced by Fiocruz, which guarantees that all stages of production are carried out in the country.

The immunizers will be made available “as soon as the quality control tests that occur after the final processing of the vaccine are completed”, the institution said in a statement sent to the press.

Fiocruz started domestic production in July 2021, after signing the technology transfer contract with AstraZeneca, but it depended on imported inputs.

“The Covid-19 pandemic made clear the problem of dependence on active pharmaceutical ingredients for the production of vaccines. With this approval today by Anvisa, we achieved a vaccine 100% produced in the country and, in this way, we guarantee the self-sufficiency of our Unified Health System (SUS) for this vaccine”, said Friocruz in the note.

The institute claims that procedures such as the one that enabled the creation of the 100% national vaccine used to take 10 years. The process, this time, took about a year.

Mauricio Zuma, director of the Institute, says that the registration of the 100% national immunizing agent with the IFA, carried out at the Bio-Manguinhos unit, demonstrates “the capacity to establish a highly complex production process”.
