Fipe raises forecast of inflation measured by the CPI in October

The coordinator of the Consumer Price Index at the Economic Research Institute Foundation (IPC-Fipe), Guilherme Moreira, raised the forecast for the indicator at the end of October, from 0.31% to 0.37%.

In the second quadrissemana of the month, released this Tuesday (18), the IPC-Fipe recorded a high of 0.33%, slightly above Moreira’s projection of 0.28%.

“The main surprise of the indicator came from the Food group, with an increase in some items that surprised”, says Moreira, who points to the increase in products in natura (3.19% to 3.87%) as the main bullish factor, with an increase in tubers, fruits and vegetables, with a contribution especially from potatoes (24.01% to 25.58%), one of the items with the greatest weight within the group.

In view of this scenario, Moreira revised upwards the forecast for the Food Service result from 0.21% to 0.58% at the end of October.

On the other hand, long-life milk followed in deflation (-10.18% to -8.72%). At the end, according to Moreira’s calculations, the item drops 6.39%. “The good news is the result of milk, which had an accumulated increase in the year of more than 50% and is returning this increase, which is natural”, he evaluates.

Moreira also attributes the increase in the second reading of the month to the acceleration of the Transport group (-1.52% to -0.99%).

At the end, according to the coordinator’s calculations, gasoline (-8.08% to -5.74%) fell 0.95% and ethanol (-10.78% to -6.76%) rose 1, 66%.

“In the next readings, it is unlikely that fuels will continue to fall. Therefore, the observed deflation movement ends”, evaluates Moreira, who revised upwards the Transport forecast in October, from a deflation of 0.74% to a smaller drop of 0.24%
