Fire at children's hospital in India leaves six newborns dead

At least six newborns died in a fire at a children's hospital in the Indian capital, New Delhi, on Saturday (25), local authorities said.

Fire chief Atul Garg told CNN that twelve newborns were rescued, but six died. He also reported that one of the saved babies is in serious condition and the other five are receiving medical care.

The rescued babies have not been identified because authorities have not yet found their birth records, Garg said. It is unclear whether the documents were destroyed in the incident.

Delhi fire officials said they received a call at 11:32 pm local time and nine fire crews were rushed to the call.

Rescue operations are ongoing, Garg said, adding that the fire broke out in a neighboring building but the exact cause was yet to be determined. Video footage from the fire department showed flames consuming the ground and upper floors of the hospital.

In 2021, 10 newborns died in a fire at a hospital in the state of Maharashtra, in western India.
