Eleven people died after a fire broke out in a holiday home for the disabled in eastern France on Wednesday morning, officials said.
The fire broke out before 6:30 am local time, while disabled tourists and their caregivers were still sleeping in the two-story building in the town of Wintzenheim, about 70 kilometers south of Strasbourg.
“We believe we have located 11 bodies,” a firefighter told Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who was visiting the site. Eight bodies were found and three more were believed to have been located under the rubble.
The guest house in the town of Wintzenheim was rented by a charity that cares for people with intellectual disabilities. 28 people were staying, and 17 managed to escape the fire.
“Some of the people who were on the first floor managed to escape, but most of those who got out were on the ground floor,” said Lieutenant Colonel Philippe Hauwiller, who led the rescue operations.
The fire destroyed about two-thirds of the site. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
