A fire killed at least 10 people in a nursing home in northern Spain, the Aragon regional government said on Friday (15).
The fire in the town of Villafranca del Ebro, 35 km southeast of Zaragoza, started in a residence for the elderly called “Jardines de Villafranca” at around 5 am local time. It took firefighters in the Zaragoza area a few hours to bring the blaze under control, a regional government spokesman said.
The spokesperson was unable to specify whether all the victims were residents of the nursing home, where 82 people lived.
One person was in critical condition, while several others were receiving treatment, mainly for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters, ambulances and police were at the scene, the spokesman said. The cause of the fire was still being investigated.
