A large fire broke out and continued to rage for several hours at a BAE Systems shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, northwest England, where a new generation of nuclear-powered submarines is manufactured, but there is no risk of a radioactive leak, police said today. Police in Cumbria said in a news release that two people were taken to hospital for what was believed to be smoke inhalation, adding that no other casualties had been reported. According to the same source, all workers at the Devonshire shipyard were rushed out of the facility. The Astute- and Dreadnought-class submarines are built at the facility, according to BAE Systems’ website. Police urged residents in the area to stay indoors with their windows closed. The fire broke out around 00:45 (local time; 02:45 Greek time). The cause is not yet clear. Source: RES
