A fire that broke out on a Russian oil rig in the Black Sea, which was hit by Ukraine on Monday, has spread to the wells, a Russian official announced today.
“The fire on the platform is not in remission, we are trying in vain to approach by boat. The fire has spread to the wells, attempts to extinguish it continue,” said Olga Covitidi, a Crimean senator who was annexed by Russia in 2014.
Moscow this morning blamed Ukrainian forces for hitting three Tchernomorneftegaz drilling rigs, injuring at least three workers and leaving seven others missing.
This is the first blow to offshore hydrocarbon drilling infrastructure in Crimea since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.
Today, a high-ranking Russian official on the peninsula, Oleg Kryutskov, told the Telegram that search and rescue operations were continuing and that there was still “hope” that the missing would be found alive.
