A fire broke out and completely destroyed the historic pine tree of the coastal city of Pescara, in central Italy. The flames reached outside the gardens of many houses and residents tried to put out the fire themselves, with buckets and water hoses, before firefighters arrived.
Many bathers left the organized beaches because they started to are on fire and palm trees, at the entrance of the beaches.
There are also outbreaks of fire in the wider area which belongs to the Abruzzo region. Five people were taken to hospital due to shortness of breath (including a five-year-old girl and two nuns) but their condition is not worrying.
The Italian Fire Brigade and the Civil Protection sent reinforcements from both Florence and Rome. About twenty houses and a nursing home were evacuated as a precaution. According to the information so far, the fire spread very quickly due to the strong wind and the incomplete cleaning of the Pescara pine tree. The local prosecutor’s office, however, launched an investigation to determine if it could be an arsonist.
