A huge fire at a metallurgy factory on the outskirts of Berlin generated clouds of black smoke this Friday (3), with firefighters fearing the presence of toxic components in the air.
According to a Berlin fire brigade spokesman, the fire broke out on the first floor of the multi-story building where chemicals are stored and prompted firefighters to ask local residents to stay indoors, close all windows and switch off air conditioning units.
“We could only put out the fire outside,” said Adrian Wentzel of the Berlin fire department, adding that “the fire spread so that it burned up to the roof and the building partially collapsed.”
The fire broke out at “Diehl Metal Applications”, which supplies the automotive industry and is part of the Diehl Group, known as a weapons manufacturer.
Wentzel said the fire department at Berlin airport was called in to help “because we can cover longer distances with the airport fire engine tower.”
The cause of the fire was not yet known, the spokesman said, and there were no reports of injuries.
