Fire hits Castro Alves Theater in Salvador

A fire hit the Castro Alves Theater in Salvador, Bahia, this Wednesday (25).

The Fire Department reported that the fire is located on the upper floor of the Theater, between the slab and the roof, which is made of fiber cement tiles.

According to the commander of operations in the capital of Bahia, Colonel Aloísio, as the fire is confined to this space, it is “generating a lot of energy”.

Firefighters are insulating the lower part of the property to prevent the fire from spreading and will open the tiles to create “natural and efficient ventilation to eliminate heat and energy”. In this way, it will be possible to identify the focus of the fire and carry out localized combat.

Theater once hit by fire in 1958

Construction of the Castro Alves Theater began on July 2, 1957 and was completed a year later, on June 30, 1958. The chosen name is a tribute to the Bahian poet Castro Alves, known as the “poet of slaves”.

Five days before the official inauguration of the house, shortly after being opened to the public, the Theater was destroyed by a fire of unknown causes on July 9, 1958.

The process of rebuilding the house lasted nine years and the Theater was only reopened in March 1967, at the height of the military dictatorship. The establishment closed again from 1989 until it reopened in 1993 for renovations. Since then, the Castro Alves Theater Complex has established itself as a cultural center in the city of Salvador.
