“Fire in the Amazon does not have a natural origin”, says the coordinator of MapBiomas

In an interview with CNN, the general coordinator of MapBiomas, Tasso Azevedo, stated that the fires in the Amazon forest are not of natural origin. Despite this, President Jair Bolsonaro (no party) said that the attacks suffered by Brazil on deforestation in the area “are not fair”.

“Fire in the Amazon happens to clear pastures and to end the deforestation process,” said Azevedo. “In general, under normal conditions, the chance of having fire from natural causes in a humid tropical forest like the Amazon is one in 500 years.”

During the opening of the Invest in Brazil Forum, in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, Bolsonaro stated that the Amazon “because it is a humid forest, it does not catch fire”. In addition, he invited investors to visit the place.

“If you want to attract investments to the country, you have to be very serious with the facts,” said Azevedo.

“He [o investidor] wants to know exactly what he’s getting himself into.”
