On Monday (24/7), its fire brigades fought the flames Cyprus as fire broke out in the Elitzies area in the state Forest of Paphos. The flames approached a historic monastery but finally the firefighters managed to contain it.
As it conveys the sigmalive.com the press representative of the Department of Forestry Giorgos Constantinou reported on Tuesday morning (25/7) that the fire has been contained and with the first light of day the flights of aerial vehicles started again. In particular, since 5:47 in the morning, seven aircraft are operating while both aircraft of the British bases were put on standby. “The good thing,” said Mr. Constantinou, is that there have been no flare-ups but only a few outbreaks.
The fire broke out at 18:30 on Monday afternoon, in the heart of the densest forest area in Cyprus, to the north of the valley of the cedars. The fire burned a pine forest, but its extent is expected to be calculated today.
The fire occurred under the Holy Monastery of Panagia Kykkos. Bishop Nikiforos of Kykkos and Tellyrias was also found near the fiery blaze.
