Fire in Turkey: The Dardanelles were closed again due to the fire in the province of Canakkale

Vessel traffic was suspended for the second day in a row today in the Dardanelles Straits, in the northwest Turkey, due to forestry fire which has expanded to an area of 15,000 acres, announced the Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry.

THE maritime traffic was closed in both directions in order not to endanger the 8 airplanes and 26 helicopters involved in extinguishing the fire and which are being supplied with water from the area, Minister Ibrahim Youmakli explained.

“Today the situation is better than yesterday (…) We managed to limit the spread of the fire” raging in Canakkale province, he added.

The intensity of the winds, which yesterday Tuesday were blowing at a speed of up to 70 kilometers per hour, making the work of extinguishing difficult, this morning has decreased. But the authorities fear that they will strengthen again in the afternoon and reach 60 kilometers per hour, reports APE-MPE.

In total 1,251 people from nine villages as well as from a university campus were forced to move away from the area, the provincial governor announced. Eighty-three people who experienced problems from smoke had to be hospitalized. Nine houses and about 10 cattle sheds have been destroyed by the fire, as a result of which about 90 animals have been burned.

Turkey is trying to modernize its firefighting equipment after the devastating fires that hit its southern and western coasts in 2021. By then more than 2,000,000 acres of forest and at least nine people had lost their lives.
