Fire is controlled at the Palace of Versailles; building is emptied

A fire broke out at the Palace of Versailles on Tuesday, forcing the evacuation of visitors from one of France’s busiest tourist sites before it was brought under control, a spokesman said.

“The firefighters arrived. There is no more smoke, no more flames and no damage to the collection,” added the spokesperson. The fire started in a roof area where renovation work was being carried out.

The Palace, built in the 17th century for King Louis XIV, was the main royal residence until the French Revolution and the overthrow of the monarchy in 1789.

More than seven million people visit the palace every year. Later this summer, it will host the equestrian events of the Olympic Games.

In 2019, a fire consumed the roof of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The flames reached the building and almost toppled the main bell towers. All over the world, viewers watched in horror as the medieval building burned down.
