Fire off Yemen’s Salif port in the Red Sea

British maritime safety company Ambrey announced today that a fire was observed in the maritime area approximately 58 nautical miles southwest of the Yemeni port of Salif in the Red Sea. The crew of a passing ship noticed smoke rising from the water, possibly related to the destruction of a remotely piloted unmanned surface vehicle (USV), Ambrey explained. “Enemy manned and unmanned vessels are operating in the area,” added the same source. Yemen’s armed movement Ansar Allah (“Supporters of God”), known in the West by the family name of its leaders, the Houthis, has launched dozens of attacks since November, using drones and missiles, against ships it believes are headed for or linked to Israel or the US, in solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where war between Israel and Hamas has been raging since October.
